self-care spotlight: meditation
Happy Tuesday! Last week, one of the topics we covered was the importance of self care. This term can be defined in so many different ways. It could be reading a book, having a movie night in, completing a cross word puzzle, journaling, reading a book, taking a long shower, cooking yourself a meal, the list goes on and on... it’s fun to get creative! The important part of self care is focusing on you.
Today’s self care spotlight shines down on a practice that in my opinion, takes the cake amongst all of my SC practices: meditation.
According to the Merriam-Webster dictionary, the definition of meditation is “to engage in mental exercise (such as concentration on one’s treating or repetition of a mantra) for the purpose of reaching a heightened level of spiritual awareness”(2021). To put it simply, meditation is the practice of paying attention to the breath for just a few moments in your day. Inhale, exhale, repeat. Easy, right?
Not exactly. I’ve dabbled with this exercise over the last three-ish years and while it might sound simple, personally, I’ve had a hard time with making this an every day thing. We hear “consistency is key” so often, but do we ever reflect on how f*cking hard it is to stay consistent?! Answer: not nearly enough. While I’m not perfect with my own meditation practice, I’m proud of how far I’ve come. Now, I try to sneak in at least five minutes each day to meditate, which started a few months ago. It’s taken a lot of practice for me to get here, so start wherever you feel comfortable!
yoga is one of my fav forms of meditation. it allows me to slow down and focus on my breathing.
My challenge for you? Try it out. Play around with different forms of meditation. This could be as simple as taking a walk and counting your breath. It doesn’t have to be anything fancy! The key here is to take care of your mind so you can show up and be a better version of yourself every day.
To wrap this post up, I want to leave you with a few of my favorite YouTube meditations. These are all ten minutes long, but you can find so many others at different lengths of time!
Happy meditating!
